Cloud App Launcher security enhancements

To prevent the Cloud App Launcher from being used to run unauthorized applications or malicious software, PowerBuilder 2025 has made the following improvements to the download and execution of the launcher:

  • The launcher now only allows the download and execution of applications and executable (app.exe) that carry the "appeon" flag, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of the content being downloaded.

  • At startup, the launcher retrieves a list of permitted URLs from the apprun.json file and only allows access to and downloading from these specified URLs.

Due to these changes, applications deployed in PowerBuilder 2025 can only be run through Cloud App Launcher V3. Cloud App Launcher V3 can coexist with Cloud App Launcher V2, but please note the following:

  • Cloud App Launcher V2 supports applications deployed in PowerBuilder 2022, 2022 R2, or 2022 R3. Cloud App Launcher V3 supports applications deployed in PowerBuilder 2025 or later.

  • To upgrade the launcher and application to PowerBuilder 2025, the process varies depending on the version upgraded from:

    • When upgrading from PowerBuilder 2022 R3 3391 or later, users can click the application's desktop icon to upgrade the Cloud App Launcher from V2 to V3 and start the upgraded application in the new launcher.

    • When upgrading from any version earlier than PowerBuilder 2022 R3 3391, the first time the upgraded application is started, it must be run via a web browser. This allows Cloud App Launcher V3 to be downloaded and installed, and also refreshes the application's desktop icon and shortcut menu. After that, the application can be started through the desktop icon or the Start menu.
